How I Quit Smoking Part Two |
| |
|
The First Few Days Was The Hardest |
On day two of my now non smoking life I woke up and being a Tuesday I prepared myself to go to work, I had a quick
wash, a coffee and set off, when I got there I had a quick coffee, given the keys to a truck, did my vehicle checks
and set off up the road before I saw anyone that could offer me a cigarette and now I was not in a position to be
tempted and apart from that I did not want one anyways as I was determined to be a non smoker from yesterday. I had
made a mental note of the day 01/Sept/1997 and this would be the anniversary of when I became a non smoker. I
managed to get through the day ok and thought to myself that is two days gone by now I can do another two and it
should be easier on day three and four than day one and day two and indeed it was.
On day four I decided I would now have to test myself and went to the pub for a quick beer, I thought I would have
to get used to being around smokers and now was the time to test this out. On entering the pub I saw a couple that
I knew and although he was a non smoker his girlfriend was and I ordered my pint and went over to say hello, the
girl was smoking and offered me a fag and I told her that I had been stopped since Monday of that week and that I
did not want one, she looked at me quite surprised as she knew I had been quite a heavy smoker but she respected my
decision and put them away. I told her that I would have to get used to people smoking around me and I was testing
myself. I managed to stay with them for about two drinks and then I went home. When I was in doors I could smell
tobacco smoke on my clothes and promptly put them in the wash. That was the end of day four and I thought I have
now done four days I can do eight, but now the real test was looming as it was my birthday at the weekend and I was
planning on a big night on the town with the boys.
I remember going out and ending up in a night club and seeing all the smokers there and I was thinking I used to
look like them but not anymore, I had a birthday snog from a girl that smoked and I did not like the taste of her,
it was like snogging an ash tray, yuk, and I must have tasted like this in the past.
After a month of being a non smoker I thought I have been one month and can now do it again and this is how I went
on for about a year, it is all in the mind, you don’t need patches or quit kits although these may help, you just
need the right mind set and have will power to do it. If you think like me and get it into your mind that if you
stop eating and drinking you will die eventually, but if you stop smoking nothing will happen, you don’t need to
smoke to live, it does not keep you alive, some people think that it will calm your nerves after fright etc, but
there are other things that will do this, like a nice cup of tea or coffee.
